ST Instructor License Types

Official ST Instructors® are licensed to teach Straightness Training (ST) according to the standards and guidelines of Straightness Training® as composed by Marijke de Jong®. This is regulated by a license agreement.

The license agreement regulates the rights, obligations, and the working relationship of the ST Instructors in the ST Instructor Network (STIN) by setting standards on knowledge, skills, educational formats, and business procedures.

1. Reason for Licensing

The idea and essence of licensing is to create a guild of ST Instructors that has the exclusive right to teach Straightness Training® by Marijke de Jong®, and supply ST teaching services of high quality and in accordance with up to date standards.

Straightness Training® by Marijke de Jong® has taken a huge flight around the world, and it’s vital that the existing and growing ST community is served with dedicated ST Instructors who teach ‘pure’ Straightness Training, which means the following;

  • If clients come to an ST Instructor for ST, and want ST as a service, they should be offered pure ST, and have the guarantee that they can rely on the fact that the teaching and training is according to ST dimensions, ST keys, ST areas, ST training pillars, ST exercises, ST frameworks, ST concepts, and ST principles.
  • The ST Instructor’s teaching and training should not differ from other ST Instructors. ST is an official well thought-through program, and all clients should receive the same education to maintain integrity and to keep the teaching congruent and consistent.

Therefore the ST Instructor’s teaching and training are based on the official ST guidelines determined by Marijke de Jong and the ST Instructor Network (STIN) itself.

‘Pure ST’ doesn’t mean it’s static. Within the STIN we can all learn from each other, we all are forever students, we will always keep updating and increasing our knowledge and skills.

For sure new concepts will be added to ST through the years to make it better and stronger, and ST will continue to evolve as Marijke de Jong’s awareness and that of the ST instructors will widen, broaden and deepen.

2. Compatibility Guidelines for ST Instructors

All licensed ST Instructors feel a shared responsibility to keep Straightness Training a pure brand and a premium brand, and they will contribute to that and we do prefer and hope to see that ST will be a spearhead of their companies.

However, ST Instructors might offer add-on equestrian methods and techniques, but they will always make sure that these equestrian methods and techniques are not contradictory to ST or diluting it.

The guidelines for ST Instructors are as follows:

  • If an ST Instructor wants to offers additional equestrian techniques that support the well being of the horse – such as physiotherapy, acupuncture, horse massage, stress-free trailer loading, or hoof trimming – in their practice, that’s perfectly fine.
  • If an ST Instructor has knowledge and skills from other educational programs – such as NH, clicker training, body awareness, centered riding, equitation science, biomechanics – it’s, of course, no problem to use this knowledge, as long as it doesn’t change the ST teaching and training in its core, and the ST Instructor doesn’t lose sight of the essence of ST.

We are very flexible, but we do protect the purity of ST that is being taught for the benefit of the horse, the student, and the future of the ST Instructor Network and ST.

3. Annual Agreement

License types are awarded to ST Instructors after they have been subjected to education, training, and exams by Marijke de Jong to insure that ST students receive education that is of predictable quality according to standards, set by Marijke de Jong.

A license will be awarded for a calendar period of one year, and will be renewed each year.

Staying updated is an important part of being a Licensed ST Instructors.

This is achieved by:

  1. Annual exam: By taking the annual theory exam with questions about the updated materials in the Mastery Program on the ST website, and about a list of books, determined at the beginning of the year, the ST Instructor proofs that the ST Instructor stays current when it comes to ST knowledge.
  2. Mastermind Sessions: By attending all six live online Mastermind Sessions with Marijke de Jong and the ST Community the ST Instructor stays up to date with the latest news and connected to the ST Students in the online ST Community.
  3. Personal growth: By submitting Touchstones in the ST Evaluation Program and /or attending a practical ST Workshop or ST Clinic or private lessons with an ST Instructor with a higher license type or with Marijke de Jong, the ST Instructor keeps working on improvement of ST skills.
  4. Contribution: By contributing to the ST Instructor Network and ST Community the ST Instructor meets the highest need and value of ST.

4. Base of the License Types

There are 8 License Types, and the awarded License Type depends on the Grade the ST Instructor has obtained in the ST Evaluation Program.

5 Grades in the ST Evaluation Program can be achieved:

Grade 1, 2, 3, 4 or 5, where Grade 5 is the most advanced level.

In 2019, the highest grade obtained by licensed ST Instructors is grade 4.

The granting of the final grade depends on the personal skill of the ST Instructor displayed with its own, self-trained horse in the ST Evaluation Program.

A licensed ST Instructor commits to maintaining the level of skill during the year of license and will continue to develop towards a higher grade or towards higher stars within the obtained grade.

The path to Mastery

In general, there’s a difference in:

  • 1. Seeing ST as an ‘add-on’ method to any kind of equestrian discipline.
  • 2. Seeing ST as something to ‘master’ in full detail to the highest, widest, broadest, deepest level.

Both paths can be followed by ST Students, but an ST Instructor will follow the second path, the path to Mastery and the path of pure ST.

This way, the grade of the ST Instructor guarantees a consistent quality of services provided for all parties.

Besides personal ability in training horses, other characteristics such as professional maturity, experience, didactic skills, and leadership qualities are represented by the license types.

5. License Types

The guild of official ST Instructors is organized around the principle of increasing skillsets which the ST Instructor can offer to ST students.

These increasing skillsets are recognizable by the License types which are awarded to the individual ST Instructors.

The License Types are named:

  • A, B, C, D, E, F, G, in descending order of the magnitude of their body of knowledge and skills that they can offer to ST students.
  • M, which is for ST Instructors who no longer update or upgrade (see chapter 8).

Determining attributes of the Licence Types

The most defining factor is the achieved personal ability in training horses according to the principles of ST, measured in the ST Evaluation Program.

Though, the hierarchy in licence-type reflects much more than only the personal ability in training horses measured by the Evaluation Grade.

Other supporting license attributes that determine the licence structure are:

  • Professional maturity
  • Experience
  • Didactic skills
  • Leadership qualities
  • Communicating skills online and offline
  • ST Evaluator skills
  • Mentor skills to other ST Instructors
  • Synergy in on- and offline working with the managing board – ST Headquarters (ST HQ) – consisting of:
  • Contribution to the strengthening of the ST organisation
  • Contribution to the improvement of the ST methodology
  • Contribution to the expansion of ST around the world
  • Contribution to the strength of the ST brand.

The following License types are used:

      • Type A: Grade 4 and 5 – extended license
      • Type B: Grade 4 and 5 – basic license
      • Type C: Grade 3 – extended license
      • Type D: Grade 3 – basic license
      • Type E: Grade 2 – extended license
      • Type F: Grade 2 – basic license
      • Type G: Grade 1 – basic license
      • Type M: ST Ambassador

In 2019, the following license types are active:

The following paragraphs describe the rights of the ST Instructor License Types A, B, C, D, E, F and G.

The advantage of the license types is that the instructor can present him/herself in a clear and distinct way, and the customer has an insight into the quality standard offered by the instructor.

6. Educational Formats

Each license type defines which educational formats are allowed to be given by the licensed ST Instructor.

This system of licensing is meant to guarantee a predictable and consistent degree of quality offered to the ST student.

The following educational formats are used by ST Instructors:

  • ST Lectures: theoretical lectures about ST to a group of auditors – the objective is to create awareness.
  • ST Lessons: private lessons 1 to 2 students for 1 to 2 hours.
  • ST Workshops: 3 to 6 riders for 1-5 days – 15 or fewer spectators.
  • ST Clinics: 6 to 8 riders for 2 to 3 days – 15 or more spectators.
  • ST Mastery clinics: ST Clinics with ST Mastery Students only.
  • ST Live Events: with lectures, demos, lessons, riders, and large groups of spectators.
  • ST Demos: demo with own horse to riders and spectators.
  • ST Demos – small format: demo with own horse to 1-2 private students.
  • ST Training horses: offering to train a horse for (new) clients.
  • ST Training horses – small format: taking over training sessions from private students (max. 3 weeks).

8. License Type M

If an ST Instructor wish to no longer follow the update and upgrade guidelines, we offer the possiblity to continue with the License Type M.

This might be because of personal motivation, physical limitations, lack of training facilities or available horses, age, or other responsibilities in life require first priority.

Now we don’t want these ST Instructors – with precious experience and business success – to resign their ST License because they cannot meet the requirements or choose not to meet the growth demand in personal skill with the update and upgrade standards.

For this reason, we have introduced the ST Ambassador License M.

The only difference between this License Type M and the other License types is the acceptance of the present Level of skills and the waiver of obligation to update or upgrade conforming the improving 2.0. standards.

This means, that an ST Ambassador is able to teach ‘pure ST’ in one-on-one and hands-on situations.

Though, an ST Ambassador cannot be an active ST Evaluator, because becoming and remaining an Evaluator means that one has to be updated to the latest standard.

9. 5 Year Policy

Every 5 years, it is important that the ST Community and market can verify that the level of craftsmanship of an ST Instructor A, B, C, D, E, F, G is still kept intact.

Therefore, when it comes to these ST Instructors, it is expected that:

  • Either the next grade will be reached within five years after the previous upgrade.
  • Or the current grade is completely renewed in all five Training Pillars on the preferable level of 2 star in each training pillar.

Only if an ST Instructor reaches the level of ST Master by achieving grade 5 with 3 stars in all five training pillars, it will be kept for a lifetime.

If an ST Instructor A,B,C,D,E,F,G no longer wants to update or upgrade, this ST Instructor can either become an ST Ambassador with License Type M or resign.

10. Resignation

Each year, an ST Instructor can decide not to renew the license and resign.

Also ST HQ can decide not to renew a license, and reasons for not prolonging a License can be:

  • The update requirements were not met at the end of the year and the instructor does not want to continue as an ST Ambassador (License M).
  • The instructor wants to, or has been mixing and matching too many other approaches or methods with ST, and is therefore no longer teaching pure ST.

After resignation, the instructor will continue under a private label.
